TREATMENT FOR SCOLIOSIS
When the spine is bent or curled to the left or right, this is called scoliosis. A healthy spine should be exactly vertical (except for the typical curve in the spine, of course!) It is frequently difficult to determine the exact origin of this unnatural bend. It is possible that it is merely a little bend induced by a simple misalignment of a single vertebrae in the beginning of life. When the body is forced to adjust, it builds muscle that will continue to pull the spine into lateral curves in order to maintain the level of the head for a long period of time.
Several factors can contribute to this misalignment, including postural difficulties, degenerative illnesses, and traumatic events. However, while the condition most commonly manifests in children and adolescents (especially those aged 10-12) during periods of fast growth and development, the disorder can also manifest itself in individuals over the age of 50. Scoliosis is more common in elderly persons and is typically caused by degenerative illnesses like as osteoporosis.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT’S SCOLIOSIS?
It is common for parents or family members to be the first to recognize a child or adult with scoliosis since the shoulders and pelvis no longer appear to be in alignment. A physical examination will evaluate the patient's gait as well as the curvature of the spine, which will be determined by visual and manual tests. An Adams Position Test, in which the patient is required to bend forward as much as possible, can be used to determine whether or not a problem is occurring. The degree of the scoliosis will be determined by an x-ray if there is a visible curvature found during the examination.
HOW DOES A CHIROPRACTOR APPROACH SCOLIOSIS?
A competent chiropractor is trained to conduct a comprehensive examination to establish whether or not a patient has scoliosis in their spine. As soon as the problem is recognized, the chiropractor will conduct a thorough health history to determine whether or not there are any variables that may be contributing to the occurrence of scoliosis. This evaluation aids in the determination of the most appropriate treatment for the specific patient.
